ROCK HILL, SC – Clinton College has announced today that the senior bishop of the A.M.E. Zion Church, George Edward Battle Jr., will be the speaker for the college’s 125th Founders Day in March. Bishop Battle, who is an alumnus of Clinton College and a well-known activist in the Charlotte community, will deliver a message at Founders Day Convocation on March 15th at 11 a.m. at the Kenneth Monroe Transformation Center.

“Bishop Battle is one of the most prominent alumni in the history of Clinton College,” said Dr. Lester A. McCorn, President of Clinton College. “A prominent religious leader of Charlotte and former Chair of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board, he is a great example of the successful mission of Clinton College to develop leaders who have come from challenging backgrounds. He has also demonstrated the importance of alumni support, in generous giving, loving devotion and positive promotion of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).”

Bishop Battle was elected a bishop of the A.M.E. Zion Church in 1992 after spending 19 years as pastor of Greater Gethsemane in Charlotte. In addition to his ministry, he is a founder of the Great Enrichment Program – a non-profit after-school enrichment program that has served lower-income children in Charlotte for more than 40 years. Bishop Battle also led the effort to organize Biddleville Five Points, which brought affordable housing, parks, sidewalks and small businesses to the predominantly African American community.

Clinton College will kick off its year-long celebration of its 125th year of excellence in education on Sunday, March 10th.
