Posted

By Georgette J. Williams

The first Sunday in August is set aside for “Graduate Sunday” at Washington Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church in St. Louis, Missouri. For many decades, the Livingstone College Alumni Associates have provided scholarships and financial assistance for the graduating high school students and have recognized the students continuing their education at an institute of higher learning. This year, there were 5 high school graduates: Roman Brown, Xavier Gross, Alexis McKnight, Reality Patton, & Rueben Wagner. Our scholarship recipients were Roman Brown and Ruben Wager who were awarded $700 each.

Roman Brown is the son of Kenneth and Ramona Brown and the grandson of Gwendolyn Buck. He graduated from McCluer North High School. Throughout his membership at Washington Metropolitan, Roman was an active participant in many organizations and was the first youth church percussionist. In addition to his initial award amount, Roman was the recipient of both the Lloyd & Rose Ingram and Harriet Crouch Community Service Scholarships, which, collectively, totaled $760. Roman will attend Jackson State University in the fall.

Ruben Wagner is the son of Ruby Rideout and the grandson of Lillian Wagner. He graduated from Metro Academic and Classical High School. Throughout his 18 year membership at Washington Metropolitan, Ruben has participated in several organizations including Boy Scouts, Youth Choir, and BUDS of Promise. Ruben was also active with the Christian Education Department. In addition to the aforementioned award amount, Ruben was the recipient of the Mattie Lou Snow Scholarship, which amounts to $1,000. This particular scholarship is awarded to one student who meets all scholastic, volunteer and membership requirements. Ruben will attend the University of Kansas in the fall.

Our returning collegiate students were Justin Brown, Kaelyn Robinson and Riane Davis.
