On June 29, 2024, Clinton College hosted its highly anticipated Welcome Festival, celebrating the commencement of the Summer Bridge Program. This annual event is designed to ease incoming first-year students' transition from high school to college, providing them with the tools and support necessary for academic and personal success. This year's festival, held on the picturesque Rock Hill, South Carolina campus, was a resounding success, marked by enthusiastic participation and a sense of community spirit.

Dr. Ike Ugboaja, Vice President of Academic Services, underscored the importance of the Summer Bridge Program in his opening remarks. "At Clinton College, we believe that the Summer Bridge program is essential for ensuring a smooth transition from high school to college," he said. "Through academic preparation and promoting social integration, students develop the skills they need for success. By closing educational gaps and creating a beloved community, we empower our students to reach their full potential and thrive through excellence without excuse."

Dr. Ugboaja highlighted the college's commitment to its four pillars: scholarship, service, social change, and spirituality. "Through our four pillars, we provide a holistic environment that nurtures academic and personal growth. By integrating these core values, we fulfill our mission to prepare our students for academic success and demonstrate positive and effective leadership skills as lifelong citizens in a global society."

The event also featured Sarah Rucker, the First-Year Experience Coordinator, who expressed excitement about supporting the largest class enrolled in the program. "Our program is designed to help incoming first-year students navigate their first year successfully and make the most of their college experience," she stated. "We have expanded our resources and enhanced our services to ensure that each student has everything they need to succeed academically, socially, and personally."

Peer Mentor LaKayla Peoples expressed enthusiasm for her role in guiding new students. "Becoming a mentor was a natural fit for me due to my desire to help others and give back to a community that has given me so much," she explained. Through the Bridge Program, I help peers jumpstart their college careers. This program prepares students for college-level education and provides hands-on training in their chosen fields."

Several Summer Bridge students shared their experiences, highlighting the program's positive impact. Trinity Barrett praised the program for its comprehensive approach, stating, "I love this program because there are so many opportunities that come along with it. It has been a life-changing experience." Barrett particularly enjoyed the financial literacy sessions, such as the visit to the Bank of America, which taught students "Better Money Habits."

Keiara Kendall echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the program's supportive environment. "The staff is welcoming and supportive, making it easy to get ahead by earning credits and building meaningful relationships," she said. "I am confident that this experience will significantly enhance my first year in college."

Nikiyah Bryant and Elijah Brown both appreciated the warm welcome and productive environment fostered by the program. Bryant noted, "I feel very welcome and settled in. I feel like I have been the most productive I have ever been." At the same time, Brown highlighted the blend of academic preparation and community integration.

Tybrana Tisdale succinctly summarized her experience, stating, "Thanks to the Bridge Program, I gained a firsthand understanding of what it's like to be a student at Clinton College. The total experience has been great so far."

The Welcome Festival concluded with optimism and excitement for the upcoming academic year. As the largest cohort in the Summer Bridge Program's history, these new students are set to embark on their college journey with a strong foundation, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the Clinton College community.
