Columbia-Camden District Pastor Awarded Clergy Renewal Grant

Posted

The Reverend Thelma Thompson Gordon has been awarded a grant through the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Program.  The Lilly Endowment Inc. funds this program, and it is administered by Christian Theological Seminary (CTS). Grants of up to $60,000 are awarded to congregations to fund a sabbatical for the Clergy and help cover the cost of interim pastoral leadership while the pastor is away.

Rev. Gordon is the senior pastor of the Greater Jones Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Columbia, South Carolina, where she has diligently served for more than four years.  Pastor Gordon, along with her husband, Sir Christopher Gordon, will embark upon approximately three months of travel to Italy, Greece, and Trinidad and Tobago.  The Gordons are excitedly looking forward to spending quality, relaxed, and uninterrupted time with family and friends in Trinidad and Tobago.  Their travels will also include planned excursions, beach and mountain retreats that will allow them time for rest, rejuvenation, reflection, and spiritual renewal.

The Lilly Endowment grant for clergy renewal is a gift that honors the vocation of pastoral ministry and lifts up the importance of congregational work as well.  This program was established in 1999 to honor Pastors for their extraordinary service and enable them to engage in a brief period of rest and renewal.  It seeks to strengthen Christian congregations through renewal and reflection.  CTS recently announced that 229 congregations across the United States were selected to receive grants through the Lilly National Clergy Renewal Program.

Congratulations to Reverend Thelma Thompson Gordon on this outstanding achievement.  To God Be All the Glory!
