Three Livingstone College freshmen made their way to the Harris-Walz Rally in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, November 2nd, the last day of early voting in North Carolina at the PNC Music Pavilion. Micah Colding, Christian Gibbs, and Hunter Howard were thrilled to see entertainers Kerry Washington, Jon Bon Jovi, Brittney Spencer, Khalid, and The War And Treaty, in support of Democratic nominee Vice-President Kamala Harris.
Christian Gibbs, a Business Administration major from Atlanta, Georgia, said, “As a first-time voter and a young black voter, it’s crucial to participate and make your voice heard. I am voting for my future, and I believe Harris is the best candidate for the next generation of America.”
Harris said she would support tax cuts for the middle class, pass a ban on corporate price gouging on groceries, work to make sure Americans can afford to buy homes, and help small businesses. This resonated with future businessman and Business Administration major Hunter Howard of Windsor, Connecticut, who said, “I identified directly with the words of Vice President Kamala Harris. Attending this rally was a great experience that punctuated the importance of voting, especially at a young age. We determine our own future with our vote.”
Also, featured stage guests included Charlotte’s mayor Vi Lyles, Governor Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein, Congresswoman Alma Adams, and a few other Democratic candidates on this year’s ballot.
As Harris reiterated to attendees, “Your vote is your voice, and your voice is your power,” Computer Information Systems major Micah Colding of Bowie, Maryland, said, “Letting your voice be heard through your vote is essential to protecting democracy. Like Bates of Johnson S. Smith said, it’s up to us to vote for the future we deserve.”
