Statement from A.M.E. Zion Board of Bishops President on the death of Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman

The late Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, a former pastor in the Piedmont Episcopal District, a former faculty member at the Hood Theological Seminary, the immediate past President of the North Carolina State NAACP, and the current Coordinator for Economic and Political Empowerment for the Piedmont Episcopal District, was our fighter, advocate, champion, brother, and friend.

He fought inequity with his voice; he challenged unjust legislation with his protest; and he advocated for the well-being of the marginalized with every bone in his body. He committed his life’s work to loving God’s people in a manner that had no limits and no boundaries.

As we mourn this tremendous loss, let us remember the intellect that was nothing less than brilliant, the passion that was unmatched, and a heart that was most remarkable. His spirit will live on and his legacy will be the knowledge and wisdom he poured into the masses that were touched during his time in this world.

His wife, Janice, is one of the respected lay leaders in the West Central North Carolina Conference of the Piedmont Episcopal District, having served as a delegate to several of the denomination’s General Conferences.

The prayers of the entire Piedmont Episcopal District Family, of the Hood Theological Seminary Family, and of The AME Zion Church Family are with the Spearman Family.

The Rt. Rev. Darryl B. Starnes, Sr.,

Presiding Bishop of the Piedmont Episcopal District

President of The AME Zion Church’s Board of Bishops
