AUBURN, N.Y., July 14 — The Harriet Tubman Home, Incorporated and The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (“The Freedom Church”) have appointed the Honorable Ventris C. Gibson as Executive Director of the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc., the independent nonprofit established by The A.M.E. Zion Church to manage and operate Harriet Tubman’s homestead in Auburn, New York.

In this role, Gibson will lead the organization’s mission to preserve, interpret, and share the life, faith, and enduring legacy of freedom Harriet Tubman embodied at the historic site where she lived and served.

“Ventris Gibson brings the vision, integrity, and proven leadership this sacred work demands,” said Bishop George D. Crenshaw, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. and Presiding Prelate of the North Eastern Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. “Her distinguished record of service to this nation, paired with her deep respect for Harriet Tubman’s legacy, gives the Board full confidence that this sacred site will be guided with excellence, faith, and purpose for generations to come.”

“I am deeply honored to accept this appointment and to serve in a place so powerfully connected to faith, freedom, and justice,” said Gibson. “Harriet Tubman’s life continues to call us to courage and action. I look forward to working with The A.M.E. Zion Church, the Auburn community, and our many partners and supporters to carry her legacy of freedom forward for generations to come.”

Gibson is the immediate past Director of the United States Mint and the first African American appointed as the 40th Director of the world’s largest coin manufacturer. She led thousands of employees and contractors across six national facilities, including the Fort Knox Bullion Depository, and oversaw the annual production and distribution of billions of circulating coins. Her tenure included modernizing operations across manufacturing, cybersecurity, and supply chain governance, and she championed the American Women Quarters Program and the Harriet Tubman Commemorative Coin Program.

Before leading the Mint, Gibson served as Chief Human Capital Officer for the District of Columbia, overseeing workforce strategy for more than 37,000 employees, and held senior executive roles at the Departments of Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, and the Federal Aviation Administration. A U.S. Navy veteran, she is a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and has received numerous honors, including the Treasury Department’s highest award and the 2024 Freedom Award from The A.M.E. Zion Council of Bishops.

For more than a century, The A.M.E. Zion Church has served as guardian of the Harriet Tubman Home, preserving the sacred Auburn property and sharing Tubman’s legacy with visitors from around the world. Gibson’s appointment reflects the Church’s continued commitment to historical stewardship, education, and faith-rooted service at one of the nation’s most meaningful sites tied to Tubman’s life.
