Global Missions Report: Haiti Needs Our Help

Posted

A Message from Dr. D.B. Cannon, Executive Director of the Department of Global Missions, The A.M.E. Zion Church

Global Missions reports tragedies from flooding and earthquake in Haiti! After talking with Bishop Dennis V. Proctor and Pastor Nicole D. Jean-Simon who successfully pioneered Zion’s presence in Haiti, word has come to Global Missions that some of our members have been impacted. Jesus Nephew, husband to Pastor Nicole, also was a part of the conversation and they both seek to inform our office on the best way we can assist those impacted! Reports are that 'Thousands have been displaced and dozens killed by flooding as country reels from climate change and political crisis.'

Dozens of people have died in the Caribbean island nation of Haiti as heavy rain and flooding devastate the country. The government’s disaster response agency said that at least 42 people had been killed, 13,300 had lost their homes, and 11 were missing after a weekend of torrential downpours that triggered mudslides and caused rivers to burst their banks.

The floods have turned city streets into churning brown rivers, damaging homes, displacing residents, and carrying away cars and debris. The disaster is the latest in a series of crises to roil Haiti, struggling with an economic downturn, a rise in gang violence, and political instability.

Dozens were also injured in a 4.9-magnitude quake that struck the Caribbean nation as it reeled from heavy rainfall and flooding. This disaster hit (2021) almost two years after a 7.2-magnitude temblor struck southern Haiti and killed more than 2,200 people, with Les Cayes sustaining the most damage.

Please join Global Missions in praying and preparing to assist those ravished by Haiti’s plight! More information on how you can help will be provided soon.
